DESCRIPTION:Uncover the history\, craftsmanship and artistry behind Ojibwe lacrosse stick making from Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe Tribal Member Joseph Gokee. During a special appearance at the Madeline Island Museum\, Gokee will discuss how Native communities in the Great Lakes region have rekindled their connection to the game of lacrosse\, his path to becoming a stick maker\, his many artistic inspirations and his ties to Ojibwe culture. Gokee will also explore the intricate craftsmanship of traditional lacrosse sticks and why lacrosse is a game of healing and sharing. \nA set of custom lacrosse sticks crafted by Gokee will be on display at Madeline Island Museum from May 24 to June 30. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the one-of-a-kind temporary exhibit\, Passages\, which tells the story of the Ojibwe migration to the place where food grows on the water. \nGokee’s exhibit\, Aagimaak: Ash Tree Lacrosse Sticks with Joseph Gokee is part of a larger Ojibwe artist series\, Mitigonaabe Geniwenimaad Mitigoon: The Spirit Who Takes Care of the Trees.
