The Northwoods Cooperative Weed Management Area (NCWMA) is looking for volunteers once again to help hand-pull garlic mustard along the Montreal River in Hurley.
MCWMA is inviting volunteers to join them at the Iron County Farmer Market on Tuesday, May 18th at 9 am to 11 am. Please register beforehand by leaving a phone message or by e-mail, info@nrothwoodscwma.org or 715-373-3415.
We will maintain social distance during the event and people should plan to wear masks when within 6 feet of others. Bring water and wear sturdy boots and hiking clothes.
The NCWMA is working with the Iron County Land and Water Conservation Department, the Ottawa National Forest, and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) to hand-pull the garlic mustard. Garlic mustard is a biennial plant the has been shown to takeover the understory of forests. Hand-pulling before it goes to seed is a way to manage this species. It is non-toxic and easy to pull out, so hand-pulling events are a nice community events.
