Celebrating a successful year, the Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park will hold its annual meeting on Wednesday Oct. 27 at Cold Iron Brewing in downtown Ironwood beginning at 5 p.m.  Pizza will be provided with beverages available at the bar.  The annual meeting includes election of officers for the Friends of MMHP followed by a short business meeting.  Those interested in joining the Friends group can sign up here or at the meeting.

“We’re urging everyone to come and hear more about the improvements while socializing with other park supporters,” says Rick Semo, president of the Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park (MMHP). “It’s been a great year and we want to share the story.”

The biggest accomplishment in 2021 was the successful move of a 900-square foot garage donated by the owners of the Davey’s Motel, Sam and Anne Davey.  The heated garage is now located off Ayer Street and will be used to store equipment used to groom the ski trails and maintain other trails in the park.  Over $10,000 was raised via private donations to help facilitate the move of the garage to its new location.  Also donating to the project were Angelo Luppino Inc. of Iron Belt, Wisconsin, along with the owners of ABR Trails and organizers of the SISU Ski Fest.  A new maintenance facility for MMHP is key to long-range plans for a public access trail running north from ABR through the Miners Park eventually connecting to the Iron Belle Trail which continues east toward Bessemer, Michigan.

“It was impressive to see the local community step up so quickly to get the storage facility ready for winter,” says Carol Erickson, secretary of the Friends of MMHP.  “Donations came in from a range of park supporters including folks who visit Ironwood to take advantage of all we have to offer.”

Other highlights in 2021 included the “Art in the Park” display which was part of the popular Emberlight Festival.  Volunteers also continued to make improvements to the new South Pabst trail which adds another kilometer to the groomed ski trail system.

“It’s important to remember this park is operated without any tax dollars and depends entirely on the support of members, volunteers and trail donations to make it all happen,” says Rich Scott, membership director of the Friends group.

Established in 2010 in a former iron ore mining site, the 167-acre Miners Memorial Heritage Park features 5 kilometers of regularly groomed cross country ski trails along with snowshoe and hiking trails.  The park is part of the city of Ironwood parks system.  The SISU Ski Fest racecourse also uses a portion of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park trail system on its route from ABR Trails to the “Finnish Line” at the City Square in downtown Ironwood.  The entire park features 14-kilometers of multi-use trails open year round.  New mountain bike trails are being developed and could be ready for use by next summer.
