The Loony Paddlers (women’s group) will explore the Slate River. We’ll paddle upstream from the south end of Gogebic Lake on the Slate River, to a place just below Judson Falls, with a hike to the falls for lunch, and then retrace our path back to the boat landing where we started. The hike is through an area of woodland flowers in full bloom and lush ferns, very beautiful. There are no rapids in that section of the river, just one “tiny” beaver dam to negotiate, and a slow current that we will be able to paddle against with minimum effort. The trip will take about 3.5 hours, including time to eat lunch.

Let’s meet at the put in at E Shore Road in Gogebic County Park at 9:30 am. Carpool will meet at Carow Park in Mercer at 8:30 am. (You get to sleep in!) Pack a lunch to take along so we can enjoy it at the falls. To reach the landing from Mercer, take County J east to County W. Turn left onto Cty W to Presque Isle. Turn left again onto County B north to Marenisco (changes to Rte 64 at the Michigan border.) After the first right turn in Marenisco, go straight onto Kimberly Ave, cross the PI River, cross Hwy 2 and stay on Hwy 64 northeast for 5 miles. Turn right onto East Shore Road (south end of Lake Gogebic.) Launch site at the bridge. Bring bug spray, and bug jackets. Keep your fingers crossed for clear weather on Wednesday, and let me know if you are coming.
