SUMMARY:Joint Trail Workday with Friends of the Porkies
DESCRIPTION:Join the North Country Trail Ni-Miikanaake Chapter volunteers for a trail maintenance session with Friends of the Porkies on National Public Lands Day. We’ll start at the corner of Co Hy 519 and South Boundary Road\, Michigan mile marker MI-47.5. We’ll work south brushing and maintaining the trail to about the rope climb – four miles south. We plan to leave a car on Hwy 519 to shuttle back. GPS coordinates of the starting point are: 46.69560\, -89.9754. \nPlan for fall hiking weather\, bring water\, snacks and mosquito nets. Light trail maintenance tools such as nippers and loppers would be useful. \nThe trail parallels the Presque Isle River and features larger old-growth trees. It includes some small hills. There is no potable water or restrooms along the way. \nThis part of the NCT goes through a not-heavily-trafficked part of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. We hope to address some maintenance issues reported for this stretch\, and develop a working relationship with Friends of the Porkies.

SUMMARY:North Country Trail – Trail Maintenance Session Black River Harbor
DESCRIPTION:North Country Trail – Trail Maintenance Session. We’ll meet at the Black River Harbor parking lot at 9 am Central. Plan to go east about 2-3 miles\, trimming\, brushing and cutting trees across the path. We expect 5-6 hours total. This is an out-and-back expedition\, so anyone can leave and go back to the parking lot at any point. \nGPS Coordinates of parking area: 46.66438\, -90.04684 \nWe will focus will be on trimming\, brushing\, and cutting blowdowns in an area of the trail which has not received a lot of recent attention. If anyone has a light string trimmer\, that will be helpful. We’ll bring the Chapter heavier trimmers. We’ve recently been notified of many blowdowns (logs over the trail) in this area so participation by certified sawyers would be welcome. \nSeptember is off to a cool start; however\, the long-term forecast is calling for temperatures in the 60s. As always\, please be sure to bring water and snacks and consider bringing bug repellent and a head net.
