Square dancing was first documented in 16th-century England, was common throughout Europe, then made its way to North America with European settlers. It became strongly associated with the romanticized image of the American cowboy in the 20th century, and its popularity spread throughout the US and worldwide.

Did you know you don’t have to be a “dancer” to square dance? Come see what it is all about in a free introductory program at the Mercer Community Center on Saturday, March 26th from 1:30-3:30pm.

Square dance caller Amanda Herdt will move you through some basic square dance steps such as Do-si-do, Allemande Left and Promenade, to the beat of modern country and rock music. Square dancing is a fun way to “move to music,” get exercise, learn a new skill, and make new friends.

No partner is needed and all ages are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Refreshments will be served. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Public Library and by the Levis & Lace Square Dance Club of Woodruff.

Please register in advance for this free, fun afternoon by calling the Mercer Public Library at 715-476-2366. Deadline for registration is Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022.
