The astonishingly pure iron ore discovered near Bessemer, Mich. in 1880, triggering an iron rush that lasted some 80 years, was produced by geological events unique in the world.
On May 3, observe ancient exposed geological layers and visit at least 8 historical mine sites, discuss mining techniques, and see historic mine buildings and infrastructure with Prof. Tom Fitz and Richard Thiede in “Iron Mining in Northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and the Geological ‘Miracle’ that Created the World’s Purest Iron Ore”!
This is a daylong class from 10 AM – 3 PM.
