Next Monday, July 9th, we will be paddling on lovely Hewitt Lake, snugged up near the Michigan border off of County Road G. This lake was recently owned by one person, and then became available by lots to others, so that neither my road atlas nor my Gazetteer shows the good road to a nice boat landing, but I’ve been there, so I know it can be done. Directions from Mercer are to go east on County Road J to Carow Park. Turn left (north) on County Road H and take it to the end where it connects to County Rd G. Continue straight onto County Rd G and follow it about 5 miles to Tapawingo Road on your left. It will be after you pass Batte Road on your right. Turn left onto Tapawingo and then right onto Hewitt Road and follow that to the end and the boat landing.
This part of Iron County is pretty remote and there are no taverns or restaurants anywhere near Hewitt Lake, so I suggest we pack our supper and raft up out there in the middle of the lake to eat. There will likely be less bugs than if we go to shore. And I recommend bug jackets and/or insect repellent to use at the landing when we are unloading and reloading our boats.Remember 5:30 pm on Monday night. I hope to see you there!
