Thornton Wilder’s American classic, Pultizer-prize winning Our Town,  explores the universal human experience of life, love, and death. Set in the fictional small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, the story follows the everyday lives of the Gibbs and Webb families across three acts.

The play is famous for its minimalist approach, often performed on a bare stage with no curtains or scenery, relying on pantomime and a narrator called the Stage Manager to guide the audience into its intimacy and truth.

The narrative is divided into three distinct acts:

  • Act I: Daily Life: Introduces the town’s routine, highlighting the simple chores, gossip, and rhythms of small-town life.
  • Act II: Love and Marriage: Follows the childhood friends, George Gibbs and Emily Webb, as they fall in love, grow up, and get married.
  • Act III: Death and Eternity: Concludes years later with Emily’s tragic death in childbirth. In a famous climax, her spirit returns to the living to revisit her twelfth birthday, only to realize that living humans are blind to the true beauty and value of everyday moments until it is tooled too late.

Written in 1934 and set in 1901, we realize that the essence of being isn’t all that different through time.
