Camp Mercer CCC Trail

There’s been a lot of progress on the Camp Mercer CCC Trail, and we’re nearly ready to install interpretive signs on the site. Help us set posts for our signs and do a little light trail clearing.

The Manitowish Waters Historical Society and the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forest are creating signs that will help visitors learn about the story of Camp Mercer and the work done by the CCC. There will be about 23 signs to install, and each one needs a post.

That’s where ICORE volunteers come in! There’s a lot of history on this site – the CCC camp was here, loggers and moonshiners used the river for moving their products, and there’s a good chance this site was used by earlier inhabitants of the forest as well. The state archaeologist has asked that we screen any of the dirt we are removing for post holes to check for artifacts.

NHAL will provide a tractor, post hole digger, and some staff to help. ICORE volunteers will assist with screening the soil and tagging and geolocating any artifacts that might be found. ICORE volunteers will also assist with mixing concrete, setting posts, and backfilling. We’ll need 4-5 volunteers to help. If we have extra hands, we can also work on doing some light brush clearing to open some views of the river along the trail.

What to bring: work gloves, sturdy work shoes, water, and hand tools like shovels or trimmers for general trail work.
